(664) The council held at *Whitby to decide whether the kingdom of *Northumbria would follow the Celtic form of Christianity, brought by missionaries from Ireland, or the Roman rite introduced by St *Augustine. The choice of Rome, symbolized in particular by adopting the Roman date for Easter, led to the rest of England turning also in that direction.
