Golf course near Ascot, in Berkshire, which was one of the first to be built inland (the origins of *golf being on seaside links). It was realized that the local heathland was in many ways equivalent to seaside conditions (hardy scrub, firm well-drained turf) and the Old Course at Sunningdale was opened in 1901. The more demanding New Course followed in 1922.
