The Sunday Times
|
|
Paper launched in 1821 as The New Observer in direct competition with the *Observer (a rivalry which has persisted ever since); a few months later it was renamed The Independent Observer. In 1822, in another rapid change of name, it became The Sunday Times in the hope of imitating the success of the *Times – of which it finally became a sister paper in 1966 (they were both bought by Rupert Murdoch in 1981). In 1962 the Sunday Times was the first British newspaper to introduce a colour magazine, an idea since imitated in various forms by all its rivals.
