Sunday schools

A movement pioneered in Gloucester in 1780 by Robert Raikes (1736–1811), prompted by the unruly behaviour of local children on the Lord's Day. Though linked with a parish church, and with compulsory attendance at the service, the educational purpose was to teach the children to read. The scheme was an immediate success, meeting a real need since the children worked every other day of the week. A Sunday School Society was formed in 1785 and the system spread rapidly through the country and even abroad. When the education acts offered all children a general *education, the Sunday schools adapted by concentrating on religious themes.
