Sun Alliance
|
|
Insurance group formed by the amalgamation of several of Britain's oldest companies in the field. The first was the Sun Fire Office, founded in London in 1710; its symbol of a smiling sun, with multiple rays like a starfish, can be seen on the outer walls of many 18C houses (meaning that the house was insured with the Sun). The company merged in 1959 with Alliance Assurance, launched in 1824 with the huge capital sum of £5 million provided by Nathan Rothschild. London Assurance, founded in 1720, joined the group in 1965; and Phoenix Assurance, dating from 1782, was included in 1984.
