The Sun

One of the main *tabloids at the bottom end of the market, competing directly with the *Mirror at a level not far short of four million copies. The paper has origins very different from its present character. In 1911 a news sheet was produced by striking trade unionists under the title Daily Herald; it became the official paper of the Trades Union Congress and by the early 1930s had a circulation of about two million. It was ailing by the 1960s, when an attempt was made to replace it with a livelier paper under the title The Sun. This failed to establish itself and was bought in 1969 by Rupert Murdoch. In 1976 the Sun overtook the Mirror to become for the first time Britain's largest-selling daily. In 1992 the two rivals were level-pegging a little below 3.7 million.
