Arthur Sullivan
|
|
(1842–1900, kt 1883) Composer of the *Savoy operas. With his brilliance at providing wit and parody in the music of the operettas, to match the verbal skills of W.S. *Gilbert, there went also an ability to tap a more solid and sentimental vein; his are the tunes for *Onward, Christian Soldiers and The *Lost Chord. But his ambition lay in serious music, where his large output included oratorios, cantatas (The Golden Legend 1886) and a grand romantic opera (Ivanhoe 1891). These were much admired in his time.
