(11 Sept. 1297) Decisive victory by William *Wallace over the English, led by the earl of Surrey. Wallace attacked after half the English army had crossed a narrow bridge over the river Forth. Those on the northern bank were destroyed and Surrey made a hasty retreat to England with the remainder of his army.
