Independent republic since 1956, lying south of Egypt. The area came increasingly under the control of Egypt from 1820 and it was on behalf of the Egyptian khedive that General *Gordon governed the province. The expedition by *Kitchener to avenge Gordon's death at *Khartoum led to the Sudan being jointly ruled by Britain and Egypt (1899–1955).
