Stansted

|
(55km/34m NE of London) The site chosen for London's third major airport after many years of protest and indecision. Used for US bombers during World War II, and for occasional commercial flights from 1957, Stansted was designated London's third airport in a government white paper of 1967. Subsequent enquiries selected quite different sites – notably Maplin Sands, north of the Thames estuary – and Stansted seemed to have been spared. But it was under consideration again in the late 1970s, and in 1986 the decision was finally confirmed. A spectacular new terminal by Norman *Foster was opened in 1991. The airport is designed to handle 8 million passengers a year, with the option of expanding up to 15 million.
