Body set up in 1972 to promote sport and physical recreation, with an annual grant from central government; there are separate councils for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It runs various national sports centres, including Crystal Palace in London, Bisham Abbey in Buckinghamshire, Lilleshall in Shropshire, the Holme Pierrepont National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham and the Plas y Brenin National Centre for Mountain Activities in Gwynedd.
