Spithead

The channel between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, often used in modern times for reviewing the fleet and in the 17–18C as an anchorage. The sailors at Spithead mutinied over conditions on board ship in April 1797, during the *French Revolutionary Wars, their example being shortly followed at the *Nore.
