Spitfire

The fastest and most agile of the British aircraft in the *Battle of Britain, and the only one to match the German Messerschmitt 109. It was designed by Reginald Mitchell (1895–1937), who lived only long enough to see the prototype fly in 1936 – a blend of tragedy and triumph dramatized in the film The First of the Few (1942).
