(London E1) Area to the east of the *City, close to Liverpool Street Station. It was famous in the late 17C and 18C for the manufacture of silk; an important element in the success of the factories was the skill of *Huguenot weavers. Spitalfields Market, established in 1682 and long the centre of the East End's trade in fruit and vegetables, was moved in 1991 to new premises further east, in Leyton.
