(1907–76, kt 1960) Architect whose first job was working for *Lutyens on the designs for New Delhi and who sprang to prominence on his own account in 1951 when he won the competition for the new *Coventry cathedral. A large number of commissions in the 1960s included the Edinburgh University library, the layout and first buildings of Sussex University, and Knightsbridge Barracks – highly controversial in that it placed a tower block on the very edge of Hyde Park.
