South Georgia

Island in the south Atlantic. Until 1985 it was a dependency of the *Falkland Islands, which lie some 1300km/800m to the northwest. It now forms a separate colony with the South Sandwich Islands, about 750km/470m to the southeast. The only inhabitants are a garrison and scientists of the British Antarctic Survey. A landing by Argentinians on South Georgia was the prelude to the *Falklands War.
