(Sotheby Parke Bernet, London W1) Auctioneers established in London by Samuel Baker in 1744; the name derives from John Sotheby, Baker's nephew, who joined the firm in 1776. For many years the leading auctioneers in books, in which at certain periods they specialized exclusively, Sotheby's moved in the 20C into the fine and decorative arts, gradually becoming the equal and great rival of *Christie's. They have been at their present address since 1917. In 1964 they bought the New York auctioneers, Parke Bernet.
