(Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Sandy, Bedfordshire) Pressure group founded in Manchester in 1889 by Mrs Robert Williamson, as a circle of ladies pledging themselves not to wear feathers in their hats. Thousands of egrets, birds of paradise and kingfishers were at that time being killed for this purpose, and London was the world centre of the plumage trade. The society now has some 750,000 members and its activities have extended to managing nature reserves (more than 100), assisting in the reintroduction of species to Britain (in particular the avocet and the osprey) and lobbying for protection of the environment and for anti-pollution measures.
