Scattered archipelago stretching some 1450km/900m southeast from New Guinea, which has been a member of the *Commonwealth since 1978. The islands were named in the 16C by a Spaniard who believed they were the source of the gold used by *Solomon for his *Temple in Jerusalem. Grouped together as a British protectorate during the 1890s, the islands became independent in 1978.
