(London W1) Institution with an unbroken history from the first meeting in 1707, in a Fleet Street tavern, of a group of gentlemen with antiquarian interests. The society was more formally constituted in 1717, had premises in *Somerset House from 1781, and since 1875 has been in *Burlington House. Its main activity is the publication of antiquarian research and its first great achievement was Vetusta Monumenta, a series of large volumes containing descriptions and engravings of antiquities, issued from 1747.
