John Soane
|
|
(1753–1837, kt 1831) Architect and collector. He worked in a highly original neoclassical style, with much use of shallow domes for overhead lighting. His greatest building, the Bank of England, was almost entirely demolished and rebuilt in the 1930s. Surviving designs include *Dulwich Picture Gallery and his own London house at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields. It was here that he built up his outstanding collection, ranging in the fashion of the time from the curious to the beautiful (the latter including Hogarth's *Rake's Progress and Election series). The objects are still in situ, for he left house and collection to the nation. It is known now as Sir John Soane's Museum.
