Robert Smythson

(c.1535–1614) England's first professional architect to be known by name; he is described on his tomb as 'architector and survayor'. He worked as the master mason on *Longleat, designed one of the most flamboyant of Elizabethan houses, *Wollaton, and almost certainly was responsible for the splendid *Hardwick Hall. His son John and grandson Huntingdon were also architects.
