William Smith
|
|
(1769–1839) Amateur geologist, variously known as the father of English geology or Strata Smith. His work as an engineer, carrying out surveys for canals, brought him in contact with rock strata of many kinds. His originality lay in realizing that they could be dated by the fossils which they contained. He kept records and drawings of his observations, which he published in his Geological Map of England and Wales, with Part of Scotland (1815) and in Strata Identified by Organized Fossils (1816–19).
