Royal Troon
|
|
Golf course on the west coast of Scotland, in Strathclyde. Troon was established in 1878 (becoming Royal Troon in its centenary year) and was first used for the *Open in 1923. It has both the longest and the shortest holes of any course regularly used for the tournament: the 6th (the Turnberry) is 528m/577yds; the 8th (the Postage Stamp) is only 115m/126yds, but a player in the 1950 Open needed 15 shots to complete it, including five from a bunker on the left, five from a bunker on the right, and another three when he found himself back in the bunker on the left (he finished triumphantly with a single putt).
