Samuel Smiles

(1812–1904) Scottish author who expressed the values and aspirations of the Victorian era, with an emphasis on hard work and making the most of one's opportunities. He wrote biographies of great men who had succeeded from humble beginnings (Lives of the Engineers 1861–2), but by far his most influential book was Self-Help; with illustrations of character and conduct (1859). Based on lectures which he had given to young men in Leeds, telling them how to improve their chances in life, this book sold in vast numbers. Character (1871), Thrift (1875) and Duty (1880) went through fewer editions.
