(1660–1753, bt 1716) Physician and obsessive collector, whose coins and medals, books, prints and drawings, botanical specimens, ethnographic objects and other curiosities (amounting in all to some 80,000 items) became the basis of the *British Museum. He kept his treasures in a house in Chelsea, where he is commemorated in Sloane Street and Sloane Square.
