Earthenware pottery decorated with diluted clay of various colours, usually standing in relief. Such wares were made to a high standard in Staffordshire in the late 17C, particularly in the form of circular dishes bearing figurative designs and a prominently displayed name. The names are most often those of the Toft family – in particular Thomas Toft, but also James and Ralph. It is assumed that these were the potters, but there is no firm evidence of this.
