siren suit
|
|
One-piece garment, similar to overalls, which was in the shops in the autumn of 1939 as suitable apparel for women in air raid shelters; it was to be worn, therefore, after a siren rather than by one (the ambiguity was immediately pointed out). The garment was later made for both sexes, and its fame derives from its use by Winston Churchill. He had a blue siren suit which he referred to as his 'rompers'.
