Lambert Simnel
|
|
(c.1475–1535) A nonentity used by Yorkist opponents of *Henry VII to legitimize an uprising in 1487. They claimed him to be Edward of Warwick (son of the duke of Clarence, brother to *Edward IV and *Richard III) and he was crowned Edward VI in the cathedral in Dublin. They then invaded England with an army of German mercenaries, whom Henry defeated with some difficulty at Stoke in Nottinghamshire. Deciding that Simnel himself was harmless, Henry employed him in the royal kitchens.
