There are believed to be in Britain about 400,000 Sikhs – followers of a religion which developed during the 15C in India, in the Punjab. Following the teaching of a succession of gurus, beginning with Guru *Nanak, Sikhism was an attempt to reconcile the two dominant religions of India, Hinduism and Islam. The majority of Sikh families arrived from the Punjab by *immigration in the years after World War II. The main Sikh communities in Britain are in London, Bradford, Birmingham, Coventry, Huddersfield, Leeds, Nottingham and Wolverhampton.
