Royal Scottish Orchestra
|
|
Formally established in Glasgow in 1891, though based on an earlier enterprise dating from 1844. It was then the Scottish Orchestra, but its role throughout Scotland was recognized with a change of name in 1950 to the Scottish National Orchestra (this in turn became the Royal Scottish Orchestra in 1991, the centenary year). The SNO greatly enhanced its reputation in the long period when Alexander Gibson was music director (1959–84), with British premieres of work by composers such as Schoenberg and Stockhausen.
