Sherwood Forest
|
|
Ancient woodland which once covered most of the western part of Nottinghamshire, known above all for its legendary association with *Robin Hood. A tiny section of it survives unaltered in the Sherwood Forest Country Park, 32km/20m north of Nottingham – about 180ha/450ac, containing some huge old oaks. The best known is the Major Oak, vast and supported on numerous crutches, which is at least 500 years old and is traditionally said to be where Robin Hood liked to set up his camp.
