Spanish white wine, fortified nowadays with brandy or other spirits, which for centuries has been a favourite drink in Britain. The name is a version of Xeres (now Jerez de la Frontera) and it referred originally to any wine from that district of Spain; *Falstaff's favourite drink is 'sherris sack', 'sack' being a general word for wine from Spain and the Canaries.
