Thomas Sheraton
|
|
(1751–1806) Furniture designer whose wide influence derived from The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book (issued in 4 parts, 1791–4). Its intention was to provide practical information about the best designs of the time, making it easily available to cabinet-makers. The style was still *neoclassical. In preparing his book Sheraton interviewed craftsmen in different sections of the trade about their special skills (there is no evidence that he himself had a workshop or ever made any furniture). The success of this book has given his name to the English furniture of the period immediately after *Hepplewhite.
