shepherd's pie

(also called cottage pie)
Dish of stewed minced meat covered with a layer of mashed potato, browned on top in the oven. First mentioned in the late 19C (when mincing machines were introduced), it is more a Victorian idea of what a shepherd or a cottager might eat than any traditional reality. When called shepherd's pie, the main ingredient should traditionally for obvious reasons be mutton or lamb; but it is now as likely to be beef.
