Bill Shankly

(1913–81)
Scottish footballer and manager. His playing career was with Preston North End (1933–49), but it is as a manager that he is remembered – for his transformation of *Liverpool. When he took over in 1959 the club was in Division 2. He took them into Division 1 in 1962, and by the time of his retirement in 1974 the club had won two FA Cups, three League championships and the UEFA Cup.
