Royal Philharmonic Society
|
|
Founded in London in 1813 for the promotion of concerts, a function which it still fulfils. Its greatest pride has been its patronage of Beethoven; amazingly the society commissioned his ninth symphony (first performed in Vienna in 1824), and when he was in his final illness its members sent him the large sum of £100. Since 1871 a bust of the great man has been on the platform at all the society's concerts.
