Archipelago in the Indian Ocean (more than 100 islands, but with nearly all the population living on Mahé), which has been a member of the *Commonwealth and a republic since 1976. Mahé was captured by the British from the French in 1794 and was ceded by the treaty of *Paris in 1814. Seychelles became a crown colony in 1903 and achieved independence in 1976.
