(1925–80) Comedian and actor who began his career in 1948 at the *Windmill Theatre. He was known on radio in Ray's a Laugh before his first major success, The *Goon Show (1952–60). With brilliant timing and a genius for mimicry, his comedy also had a characteristic element of bottled-up severity – particularly on film. Some of his greatest cinema performances were as the shop steward in *I'm All Right Jack (1959) and his three roles in Dr Strangelove (1963), but he is best known as Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther series (from 1963). Of his four marriages, the one which attracted most attention was to Britt Ekland (1964–9).
