(1896–1930, kt 1929) Racing driver who set speed records on land and water. In 1927 at Daytona, in Florida, he became the first man to drive at more than 200 mph, reaching 328kph/203mph in a 1000 h.p. Sunbeam; in 1929 he achieved 372kph/231mph in Golden Arrow (both cars are now at *Beaulieu). He established a new water speed record of 98.76 mph on Lake Windermere in 1930, before being killed in a later run.
