The Second Mrs Tanqueray
|
|
(1893) Play by *Pinero which was the first Victorian drama with 'shocking' subject matter to be a commercial success (launching the career of Mrs Patrick *Campbell). Tanqueray, a respectable widower, marries Paula in spite of a sexual liaison in her past. But their love is undermined by the constant danger of shame and dishonour if her secret becomes known. Circumstances eventually conspire to force Paula to make public the truth, and she commits suicide.
