Seaton Delaval Hall

(19km/12m NE of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) An extraordinary late house by *Vanbrugh, built 1718–28, which is both bold and awkward in its clashing elements. The central block was gutted by fire in 1822 and was long left derelict, but in recent years the house has been under restoration. The remains of the great hall and gallery, and the undamaged stables in the east wing, are like settings for some heroic Roman opera, in keeping with the classicizing self-confidence of the early 18C.
