(Edinburgh) Scotland's national archives were established in the 13C, with the appointment of a Clerk of the Rolls. The present building, the domed Register House on Princes Street, is Britain's oldest purpose-built record office. Designed by Robert Adam in 1774, it was not completed until 1827. An extension, the West Register House in Charlotte Square, was opened in 1971 in an adapted early 19C church, St George's. The equivalent archive for England and Wales is the *Public Record Office.
