Scottish National Portrait Gallery
|
|
(Edinburgh) Founded in 1882 with similar aims to the slightly earlier *National Portrait Gallery in London. Its red sandstone Italian Gothic building of 1885–90 (by Robert Rowand Anderson, 1834–1921) is shared by part of the *Royal Museum of Scotland. The gallery has a particularly strong holding of one of the greatest of British portrait painters, Henry Raeburn. In 1984 it extended its range to include photography and it now has the largest collection of Edinburgh's pioneers in portrait photography, *Adamson and *Hill.
