Name given retrospectively to four artists who responded more rapidly and vigorously than their English contemporaries to the bright colours which had burst upon Paris in 1905 in the work of Matisse, Derain and others (classed together as the Fauves, French for wild beasts). The Scots who brightened their own palettes in response were S.J. Peploe (Samuel John Peploe, 1871–1935), J.D. Fergusson (John Duncan Fergusson, 1874–1961), G. Leslie Hunter (1877–1931) and F.C.B. Cadell (Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, 1883–1937). Their work, long neglected, grew rapidly both in esteem and value during the 1980s.
