Scottish Ballet
|
|
Company established in 1969 by Peter Darrell (1929–87), who was originally a dancer with the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet. He began his career as a choreographer with Festival Ballet in the 1950s, and in 1957 he founded the Western Theatre Ballet in Bristol. An invitation from the Scottish Arts Council prompted him to move his company in 1969 to Glasgow, where it has thrived as Scotland's ballet company; Elaine McDonald (b. 1934), one of those who moved north with him from Bristol, became the company's leading ballerina. The Dance School of Scotland (the only full-time ballet school north of the border) was established in 1983, and Scottish Ballet now has several schemes taking dance out to the community; the Small Scale Touring Company performs ballet even in remote parts of the Highlands and Islands.
