(1927–96) Jazz musician who was a noted tenor saxophonist (joint leader with Tubby *Hayes of the Jazz Couriers in 1957–9, and playing with the Clarke-Boland big band from 1962), but who was best known as the founder of a jazz club. Ronnie Scott's has been the centre of British jazz, and the leading venue for visiting foreign players, since he opened it in London's Gerrard Street in 1959; it moved in 1965 to Frith Street. Since 1991 there has also been a Ronnie Scott's in Birmingham.
