New Scotland Yard
|
|
(London SW1) Headquarters of the Metropolitan *Police since 1967, just off Victoria Street. The name New Scotland Yard was also that of their previous building, designed by Norman *Shaw, on the north bank of the Thames just downstream from Westminster Bridge. The area was known as Scotland Yard from the Middle Ages because lodgings in this part of *Whitehall Palace were used by representatives of the Scottish crown.
