(39,000 in 1991) Resort in North Yorkshire, popular as a spa town from the 17C and one of the first places to cater for the new fad for sea bathing in the 18C. There are two sandy bays either side of a rocky hill crowned by the ruins of a 12C castle. The extensive facilities have also made the town a popular conference location out of season. The very grand Grand Hotel (1860s) is by Cuthbert Brodrick, architect of the town hall in *Leeds.
