Imposing range of buildings facing the Thames at *Greenwich, designed mainly by *Wren with *Hawksmoor as his assistant. The gap between the two wings was designed to allow the *Queen's House to remain visible from the river. The famous Painted Hall has a ceiling by James Thornhill (1675–1734), showing *William and *Mary bringing peace to Europe. The buildings were designed as a Royal Naval Hospital, giving sailors what the *Chelsea Hospital had recently provided for soldiers further up the Thames. The hospital continued until the mid-19C. In 1873 the buildings were adapted to their present use, as the country's main training college for naval officers.
